Field Survey Technician

Position Information

DGL provides land surveying services for public and private sector clients. DGL Field Survey Technicians shall perform and review field work associated with boundary / right of way surveys, ALTA/NSPS Land Title Surveys, topographic surveys, construction layout surveys, and/or other survey related tasks under the supervision of a Professional Surveyor. Assist Survey Department to complete land surveying services and required procedures in the planning, implementation, correction and quality review of assigned tasks. Able to perform and/or review technical procedures and knowledge of topographic, boundary and route surveys and not limited to other survey functions as assigned.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists in performing boundary surveys, topographic surveys and construction layout.

  • Assists with drawings, sketches, calculations and record keeping.

  • Assists in the research of land records, deeds, subdivision maps, easements, etc.

  • Cleans and maintains survey equipment and vehicle as needed.

  • Keeps direct supervisor promptly informed of key/significant issues or concerns.

  • Complete other survey tasks as assigned and performs related duties as assigned.

  • Work in a safe manner, abide to local, company and client safety requirements.

  • Carries out duties and responsibilities in a safe and efficient manner to maintain safe work environment and surrounding area for oneself, co-workers and public. Responds to hazardous situations and/or potentially unsafe conditions by taking corrective action as capable and promptly notifying supervisory personnel.

Skill Set

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and on difficult terrain, including entering wooded areas.

  • Familiarity with Microsoft office products suite.

  • Must be well organized and able to manage deadlines

  • Able to work on various size projects

  • Flexible to travel, including overnight, as needed

  • Professional demeanor

  • Familiar with survey field equipment and care

  • Ability to work cooperatively with others.

  • Ability to communicate effectively

  • Ability to lift/carry 40 pounds and complete physical labor

  • Ability to work outdoors in various terrain and weather conditions

Future Skills (on the job training)

Willingness to gain:

  • Detailed knowledge of MicroStation, and GEOPAK

  • Enhanced knowledge of AutoCAD and Civil 3D

  • Increased knowledge of land surveying and Trimble Business Center

Education / Registrations

  • Degree preferred, or equivalent training with 3 years of surveying experience

  • Valid Driver’s License required
