Happy National Surveyor’s Week
/Since the holiday was proclaimed by President Ronald Regan in 1984, we have celebrated National Surveyors Week each year beginning the 3rd Sunday of March. Reagan said, “In colonial days, surveyors were among the leaders in the community-statesmen, influential citizens, and shapers of cultural standards, including people such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.” With the new holiday proclaimed, he urged citizens to look back at the contributions surveyors have made to our society and to look ahead to the technology-driven future of the profession.
A Professional Surveyor is an accredited professional who measures and defines real property and its boundaries by conducting land surveys. These licensed professional surveyors help us make sense of the land we develop.
It’s an age-old trade that dates back to ancient Egypt. The great pyramid of Giza is often cited as one of the first examples of survey work, that’s about 4,500 years of surveying! Surveying is heavily intertwined with the history of the United States; three of the four presidents carved into Mount Rushmore, barring Teddy Roosevelt, were surveyors.
The profession is old, but surveyors have kept up with the times and utilize cutting edge technology to take precision measurements. Instead of using a 66-foot long 100 link Gunter’s Chain to measure and establish property boundaries, today’s surveyors use cutting edge technology such as robots, aerial drones, and GPS units.
We would like to take the opportunity to recognize our DGL survey team and their incredible work. Led by RJ Lumbrezer, PS, they honor the profession with precision, timeliness, expertise, and a deeply rooted commitment to our clients. Their work is the foundation which a project will be constructed, and its accuracy is instrumental to the final project’s success.
Professional surveyors have a wide range of responsibilities at DGL and function in various markets including traffic, commercial development, and residential applications. Professional Surveyors and survey crew members measure the land determining property boundaries, which help identify where a building or roads will be constructed. Land surveyors are experts in measuring and determining the true size of land and breaking down its various features, contributing insight to the engineer’s final plans. Their initial measurements inform the engineer of the landscape as well as both legal and physical barriers to a project and throughout many projects their site layout measurements aid construction crews in developing the land.
It’s an important holiday at our office, but the celebrations can be difficult to arrange since our survey crews are hard at work in the field. That’s why this year we’re celebrating with a company breakfast!
