DGL Receives ACEC Ohio Engineering Excellence Award

The American Council of Engineering Companies of Ohio (ACEC Ohio) recently recognized 23 projects as part of their annual Engineering Excellence Awards Competition. The award program brings well-deserved public recognition to Ohio's engineering industry by spotlighting engineering projects that demonstrate a high degree of uniqueness, ingenuity and value!

DGL Consulting Engineers, LLC received an honor achievement award for The Navarre Avenue/State Route 2 Safety Improvements project.  The City of Oregon enlisted DGL to improve the safety of Navarre Avenue / State Route 2 corridor from I-280 to Isaac Streets Drive. The corridor is a heavily traveled area for the Oregon community as well as for visitors and through traffic. Traffic congestion and risky turns by drivers contributed to the large amount of crashes in the area. The City obtained ODOT Safety Funding to reduce crashes, create a service road to serve local businesses and to set a signature look to their most visible and highly traveled corridor. Before the improvements, the area had 369 crashes over a 3.5-year period. The improvements DGL designed have already enhanced the safety of the area and reduced crashes by 40%.

The majority of transportation project decisions along a corridor have the potential to influence the visual quality of the corridor. A positive visual appearance promotes community pride, a sense of ownership, a sense of place and a corresponding sense of health and well-being. The City worked with its business and community stakeholders to develop an aesthetics plan that will continue through Oregon’s commercial area.

The project included medians that control access while providing aesthetic elements; a service drive to better serve a commercial and multi-family area; U-turns provided at key locations and decorative signal and sign poles. Lighted bollards, decorative lighting, landscaping and decorative piers showcase the uniqueness of the Oregon community.
